Book of December – The Snowy Day

Our book of December is The Snowy Day! It is a 1962 children’s picture book by American author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats. It features Peter, an African American boy, who explores his neighborhood after the season’s first snowfall. Keats received the 1963 Caldecott Medal for his collage artwork, which made The Snowy Day the first picture book with an African American protagonist to win a major children’s award.

Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa 2018 Lady 3-01Kwanzaa will be celebrated from 26 December to 1 January in the United States and in other nations of the West African diaspora in the Americans. Kwanzaa is celebrated to honor African heritage in African-American culture. Maulana Karenga, an African-American professor and a major figure in the Black Power movements of the 1960s and 1970s, created Kwanzaa in 1966. Continue reading
