Our book of April is Where the Wild Things are! It is a 1963 children’s picture book by American writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak, originally published by Harper & Row. The book has been adapted into other media several times, including an animated short in 1974 (with an updated version in 1988); a 1980 opera; and a live-action 2009 feature-film adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze. The book had sold over 19 million copies worldwide as of 2009, with 10 million of those being in the United States.. Continue reading
Our woman hero of April is Gabriela Mistral! She was a Chilean poet-diplomat, educator and humanist. In 1945 she became the first Latin American author to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature, “for her lyric poetry which, inspired by powerful emotions, has made her name a symbol of the idealistic aspirations of the entire Latin American world”. Some central themes in her poems are nature, betrayal, love, a mother’s love, sorrow and recovery, travel, and Latin American identity as formed from a mixture of Native American and European influences. Her portrait also appears on the 5,000 Chilean peso bank note.
Our book of March is Blueberries for Sal! It is a 1948 children’s picture book by Robert McCloskey. It was awarded the Caldecott Honor in 1949, and was ranked number 13 among the “Top 100 Picture Books” in a 2009 survey published by School Library Journal. It was ranked number 31 in a reiteration three years later. 
Our book of February is Harold and the Purple Crayon! It is a 1955 children’s book by Crockett Johnson. It led to a series of other books, and inspired many adaptations. The book inspired programmer Petri Purho to create the computer game Crayon Physics Deluxe, The book potentially inspired the kid’s TV show Chalkzone, and has been used frequently in children’s and art education lesson plans. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named the book one of its “Teachers’ Top 100 Books for Children”. In 2012 it was ranked number 16 among the “Top 100 Picture Books” in a survey published by School Library Journal. 
New year is the time to start something new. For 2019, Adorageek will start celebrating with you the classic illustrated children books that many of us have known and loved all these years! Those illustrated children books are often our first teachings of the real world, but such in a fun and loving way that they stayed in our hearts even until today, and are still relevant to be shared with our children, nieces or nephews, or even our grandchildren!
On 3 to 14 October 2018 we will celebrate Kinderboekenweek or the Children’s Book Week in the Netherlands! Kinderboekenweek is an annual “week” of ten days in September and October for the promotion of (Dutch) children’s book. Kinderboekenweek has been held since 1955 with different theme each year. This year, the theme of Kinderboekenweek is Vriendschap: Kom erbij! or Friendship: Join us!
