She is the main character in an eponymous series of children’s books by the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. Pippi was named by Lindgren’s daughter Karin, who asked her mother for a get-well story when she was off school. Pippi Longstocking quickly became popular in Sweden upon publication, and by the end of the 1940s, 300,000 copies had been sold. As of 2009, the book has been translated into 64 languages. Book of February – Harold and The Purple Crayon

book february 2019 harold - harold and the purple crayon-01Our book of February is Harold and the Purple Crayon! It is a 1955 children’s book by Crockett Johnson. It led to a series of other books, and inspired many adaptations. The book inspired programmer Petri Purho to create the computer game Crayon Physics Deluxe, The book potentially inspired the kid’s TV show Chalkzone, and has been used frequently in children’s and art education lesson plans. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named the book one of its “Teachers’ Top 100 Books for Children”. In 2012 it was ranked number 16 among the “Top 100 Picture Books” in a survey published by School Library Journal. Continue reading
