Do you know that our Earth actually rotates on a tilted axis? Earth rotates by itself around a fixed axis called the rotational axis. At the same time, Earth also orbits around the Sun in a fixed axis called the orbital axis. The rotational axis is not actually perpendicular to the orbital axis. As the result, our Earth is tilted to a certain angle compared to its orbital axis. And the celestial equator, the imaginary line in the sky above Earth’s equator, is also tilted to a certain angle compared to Earth’s orbital axis. Continue reading

Hero of September: Fanny Cochrane Smith
Our woman hero of September is Fanny Cochrane Smith! She was an Aboriginal Tasmanian, born in December 1834. She is considered to be the last fluent speaker of a Tasmanian language, and her wax cylinder recordings of songs are the only audio recordings of any of Tasmania’s indigenous languages. Her recordings were inducted into the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register in 2017.

Hero of September: Lili’uokalani
Our woman hero of September is Lili’uokalani! She was the first queen regnant and last sovereign monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, ruling from 29 January 1891 until the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi on 17 January 1893. Lili’uokalani was an accomplished author and songwriter. Her book Hawaiʻi’s Story by Hawaiʻi’s Queen gave her view of the history of her country and her overthrow. She is said to have played guitar, piano, organ, ʻukulele and zither, and also sang alto, performing Hawaiian and English sacred and secular music. One of her compositions was “Aloha ʻOe” or “Farewell to Thee”. Today, it is one of the most recognizable Hawaiian songs. Continue reading
