In 2020 Easter will be celebrated on 12 April. It is a Christian holiday that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus. According to Christianity belief, Jesus will be resurrected on the third day of his burial after his crucifixion by the Romans. Easter is also called Pascha in Greek and Latin, and also celebrated by non-Christians.
Easter is preceded by Lent or Great Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. The week before Easter is referred as Holy Week by most Christians. Holy Week contains Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter), commemorating Jesus’ entry in Jerusalem, Spy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday that commemorates the Last Supper, Good Friday that commemorates Jesus’ crucifixion and death, and Holy Saturday.
Easter is celebrated with a tradition of dying or coloring eggs. Easter is associated with eggs because an egg is an ancient symbol of a new life and rebirth. In Christianity, egg is associated with Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, symbolizing an empty tomb. The tradition of Easter egg originated from the early Christian community of Mesopotamia, who stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ, shed at his crucifixion. Today, the egg is often replaced with chocolates in the form of an egg or plastic eggs containing candies.
Easter is often associated with Easter Bunny, who is a popular legendary character analogous to Santa Claus in American culture. Easter Bunny is depicted as a bunny carrying a basket full of Easter eggs, which will be given to children as gifts.
Easter is usually celebrated by attending church services and holding an Easter egg hunt. However, to prevent the spread of Covid-19, let us celebrate Easter by staying at home and decorating our houses with Easter decorations such as Easter baskets, bunnies, and eggs; giving baskets of candy. Afterwards we could have a brunch with our family.
If you do not celebrate Easter, you could still share the spirit simply by planting something to celebrate new life. After all, Easter is about rebirth and a new start!
Always remember to implement Covid-19 prevention by social-distancing, covering your mouth and nose whenever you cough or sneeze, not touching your eyes, nose, or mouth if your hands are not clean, and washing your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after going outside or to public places!
