Hero of September: Fanny Cochrane Smith
Our woman hero of September is Fanny Cochrane Smith! She was an Aboriginal Tasmanian, born in December 1834. She is considered to be the last fluent speaker of a Tasmanian language, and her wax cylinder recordings of songs are the only audio recordings of any of Tasmania’s indigenous languages. Her recordings were inducted into the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register in 2017.

Book of September – Goodnight Moon
Our book of September is Goodnight Moon! It is an American children’s book written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. It was published on 3 September 1947, and is a highly acclaimed bedtime story. This book is the second in Brown and Hurd’s “classic series”, which also includes The Runaway Bunny and My World. The three books have been published together as a collection titled Over the Moon.
Islamic New Year
Muslims around the world will celebrate The Islamic New Year, also known as Arabic New Year or Hijri New Year, on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. This year, the Islamic New Year starts on the sunset of 31 August 2019. In most Islamic countries or countries where Muslims are the majority, The Islamic New Year is a public holiday.

Hero of August: Enid Blyton

Enid Blyton was an English children’s writer whose books have been among the world’s best-sellers since the 1930s, selling more than 600 million copies. Blyton’s books are still enormously popular, and have been translated into 90 languages.
She wrote on a wide range of topics including education, natural history, fantasy, mystery, and biblical narratives and is best remembered today for her Noddy, Famous Five, and Secret Seven series.

Book of August – A Bear Called Paddington
Our book of August is A Bear Called Paddington! It is a children book written by British author Michael Bond, illustrated by Peggy Fortnum and published in 13 October 1958. The book introduced Paddington Bear, the friendly bear from Peru—with his old hat, battered suitcase (complete with a secret compartment), duffel coat and love of marmalade. Paddington books have been translated into 30 languages across 70 titles and sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, and Paddington Bear has been featured in more than twenty books written by Michael Bond . Woodstock
On 16 August 2019 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock! Woodstock was an American music festival held on 15–18 August 1969, which attracted an audience of more than 400,000. Billed as “an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music”, it was held at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York, 43 miles (70 km) southwest of Woodstock. It was alternatively referred to as the Bethel Rock Festival or the Aquarian Music Festival. Thirty-two acts performed outdoors despite sporadic rain. It has become widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history, as well as the definitive nexus for the larger counterculture generation. Continue reading
Eid Al-Adha
On 11 August 2019 Muslims all around the world is celebrating Eid al-Adha, also called the Festival of Sacrifice. It is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year, the other being Eid al-Fitr. In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah.
