Book of June – The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Our book of June is The Very Hungry Caterpillar! It is a children’s picture book designed, illustrated, and written by Eric Carle, first published by the World Publishing Company in 1969, later published by Penguin Putnam. The winner of many children’s literature awards and a major graphic design award, it has sold almost 50 million copies worldwide, and has been described as having sold the equivalent of a copy per minute since its publication. The book has also been described as “one of the greatest childhood classics of all time”, and was voted the number two children’s picture book in a 2012 survey of School Library Journal readers. Summer Solstice
If you read Adorageek’s post on Equinox, then you know that our Earth actually rotates on a tilted axis. Summer solstice, or often called midsummer, occurs when a Earth’s rotational axis, or its geographical Northern pole, is most greatly inclined toward the Sun. On the summer solstice, Earth’s maximum axial tilt toward the Sun is 23.44°. This happens twice each year (once in the Northern hemisphere and once in the Southern hemisphere), when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the North or South Pole. Captain Picard Day
Are you ready, Trekkies? Let us celebrate Captain Picard Day on 16 June! As you remember, the first Captain Picard Day is celebrated on Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7 episode “The Pegasus”, when the event was held aboard the USS Enterprise-D for the ship’s schoolchildren. Hero of June: Benazir Bhutto
Our woman hero of June is Benazir Bhutto! She was a Pakistani politician who served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996. She was the first woman to head a democratic government in a Muslim majority nation. Ideologically a liberal and a secularist, she chaired or co-chaired the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from the early 1980s until her assassination in 2007.

It marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of sawm or fasting, when Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. Eid al-Fitr was originated by the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Rolling Rolling… Say Cheese!
Are you ready to roll? The Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake, or Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling, is an annual event held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper’s Hill, near Gloucester in England. It was traditionally held by and for the people who live in the local village of Brockworth, Gloucestershire, but now people from all over the world take part. The Guardian newspaper called it a “world-famous event”, with winners from the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Nepal. In 2019, the event takes place on 27 May 2019. Continue reading
