Women October 2019 Figure - Wangari Maathai-01Our woman hero of October is Wangarĩ Maathai! She was a renowned Kenyan social, environmental and political activist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Prize.  In 1977, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization focused on the planting of trees, environmental conservation, and women’s rights. In 1984, she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award.

Book of October – The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Book October 2019 Peter - Tale of Peter Rabbit-01Our book of October is The Tale of Peter Rabbit! It is a British children’s book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter that follows mischievous and disobedient young Peter Rabbit as he is chased about the garden of Mr. McGregor. He escapes and returns home to his mother, who puts him to bed after dosing him with tea. The tale was written for five-year-old Noel Moore, son of Potter’s former governess Annie Carter Moore, in 1893. The story was inspired by a pet rabbit Potter had as a child, which she named Peter Piper.

Octoberfest 2018 Maid2-01It is October and Oktoberfest is already in full swing! Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest, a large event in Germany that usually combines a beer festival and travelling funfair. Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, and usually lasts for 16 to 18 days, from mid or late September to the first week of October. Locally, Oktoberfest is often called the Wiesn. Hero of October: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Our woman hero of October is Ellen Johnson Sirleaf! She is a Liberian politician who served as the 24th President of Liberia from 2006 to 2018. She was the first elected female head of state in Africa. Sirleaf was listed as the 83rd-most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine in 2016. In 2010, Newsweek listed her as one of the ten best leaders in the world, while Time counted her among the top ten female leaders. That same year, The Economist called her “arguably the best president the country has ever had.” In 2010, Sirleaf released her first book, This Child Will Be Great: Memoir of a Remarkable Life by Africa’s First Woman President.
