Noche de Los Rábanos or The Night of the Radishes will be held on 23 December in Oaxaca, Mexico. It is an annual event dedicated to the carving of oversized radishes to create scenes that compete for prizes in various categories. The city of Oaxaca has a long wood carving tradition and farmers began carving radishes into figures as a way to attract customers’ attention at the Christmas market, which was held in the main square on December 23. Winter Solstice
If you have read Adorageek’s post on Equinox, then you know that our Earth actually rotates on a tilted axis. Winter solstice, or often called hibernal solstice or midwinter, occurs when Earth’s rotational axis, or its geographical Northern pole, is most greatly inclined away from Sun. Hero of December: Mary Somerville
Our woman hero of December is Mary Somerville! She was a Scottish science writer and polymath. She studied mathematics and astronomy, and was nominated to be jointly the first female member of the Royal Astronomical Society at the same time as Caroline Herschel. When Mary died in 1872, The Morning Post declared in her obituary that she is the queen of science. Continue reading
Whirling Dervishes Festival
The Whirling Dervishes Festival is held on 7-17 December 2018 at Konya, Turkey. The festival is held annually to commemorate the death anniversary of the Sufi saint Mevlana, or Rumi as he was known. Rumi believed that communication with God was possible through dance, and so the dance of the whirling dervishes was born with their swirling white flowing robes and black cloaks and conical headgear. In 2008, UNESCO confirmed the “Mevlevi Sama Ceremony” or the whirling dervishes ceremony of Turkey as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Chichibu Yomatsuri
Chichibu Yomatsuri or Chichibu Night Festival is held on 2-3 December at the Chichibu Shrine at Chichibu, Japan. It is considered as one of Japan’s top three festivals that feature floats, the others being Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and the Takayama Matsuri.
