World Chocolate Day

Let’s pepare for one of the sweetest days of the year, because on 7 July we will celebrate World Chocolate Day!

Girl-01Chocolate is the typically sweet food made from Theobroma cacao seeds. There are many forms of chocolate: in a liquid, paste, or in a block, or used as a flavoring ingredient in other foods. There four types of chocolate: milk (contains milk powder or condensed milk), white (does not contain any cocoa solids), dark (contains higher amount of cocoa solids), and unsweetened (pure chocolate liquor, also known as bitter or baking chocolate). The Independence Day, or also called Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a National Day of the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. In it, The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies at that time regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire. A flying saucer!

UFO-01Gather up UFO hunters and UFO enthusiasts! We will celebrate World UFO Day on 2 July 2018! UFO, or Unidentified Flying Object, is an object observed in the sky that is not readily identified. The term is then mostly associated with claimed observations of extraterrestrial crafts, many of them in the form of a flying saucer. Some celebrates World UFO Day on 24 June, to commemorate the date that aviator Kenneth Arnold reported what is generally considered to be the first widely reported unidentified flying object sighting in the United States. Others celebrate it on 2 July, to commemorate the supposed UFO crash in the 1947 Roswell UFO Incident. Continue reading

Summer Solstice

Sun-01If you read Adorageek’s post on Equinox, then you know that our Earth actually rotates on a tilted axis. Summer solstice, or often called midsummer, occurs when a Earth’s rotational axis, or its geographical Northern pole, is most greatly inclined toward the Sun. On the summer solstice, Earth’s maximum axial tilt toward the Sun is 23.44°. This happens twice each year (once in the Northern hemisphere and once in the Southern hemisphere), when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the North or South Pole. Dragon Boat Festival

Boy-01The Duanwu Festival, often called the Dragon Boat Festival or Zhongxiao Festival, is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese calendar. Because of that, the Dragon Boat Festival also often called the Double Fifth Calendar. This year, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on 13 June 2018. The Dragon Boat Festival is a public holiday in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. It is also unofficially observed by the Chinese communities of Southeast Asia, including Singapore and Malaysia.

Boy-01Muslims all around the world, rejoice! This year, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on 15 June 2018. Eid al-Fitr is one of the important religious holidays commemorated by Muslims. It marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of sawm or fasting, when Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. Eid al-Fitr was originated by the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is observed on the first of the Islamic month of Shawwal at the end of the month of Ramadan, and celebrated for one, two or three days. Laylat al-Qadr

Stars-01During Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, and also the month of fasting or sawm, there will be a special night, the Laylat al-Qadr, which is the holiest night of the year. Laylat al-Qadr is sometimes called Night of Decree, Night of Power, Night of Value, Night of Destiny, or Night of Measures. Hero of June: Anne Frank

Anne Frank-only-01Our woman hero of June is Anne Frank! Annelies Marie Frank, who was known as Anne Frank, was born on 12 June 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was known with the publication of The Diary of a Young Girl (originally Het Achterhuis in Dutch; English: The Secret Annex), in which she documented her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. It is one of the world’s most widely known books and has been the basis for several plays and films. Hero of May: Maryam Mirzakhani

Maryam Mirzakhani-only-01Our woman hero of May is Maryam Mirzakhani! Maryam, who was born on 12 May 1977, was an Iranian mathematician and professor of mathematics at Stanford University, Stanford, California. On 13 August 2014, Maryam was honored with the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics, often equated in stature with the Nobel Prize. The award is given only once every four years and only to mathematicians 40 years old or younger. Maryam was both the first woman and the first Iranian to be honored with the award. The award committee cited her work in “the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.” Continue reading
