During Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, and also the month of fasting or sawm, there will be a special night, the Laylat al-Qadr, which is the holiest night of the year. Laylat al-Qadr is sometimes called Night of Decree, Night of Power, Night of Value, Night of Destiny, or Night of Measures. Our woman hero of June is Anne Frank! Annelies Marie Frank, who was known as Anne Frank, was born on 12 June 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was known with the publication of The Diary of a Young Girl (originally Het Achterhuis in Dutch; English: The Secret Annex), in which she documented her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. Hero of May: Maryam Mirzakhani
Our woman hero of May is Maryam Mirzakhani! Maryam, who was born on 12 May 1977, was an Iranian mathematician and professor of mathematics at Stanford University, Stanford, California. On 13 August 2014, Maryam was honored with the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics, often equated in stature with the Nobel Prize. The award is given only once every four years and only to mathematicians 40 years old or younger. Maryam was both the first woman and the first Iranian to be honored with the award. The award committee cited her work in “the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.” Continue reading
